Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): What It Is and How Agencies Should Approach It
A clear explainer on answer engine optimization (AEO) in 2026: what it is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, the AEO playbook, and how agencies can package it as a service.
By Josiah Jirgens, Technical Director of ComKey Consulting
Search used to give you a list of links and let you pick. More and more often now it gives you an answer: a synthesized paragraph from Google's AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, or a classic featured snippet, with a few sources cited. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of getting your content to be that answer, or to be one of the sources it's built from. If you've been doing SEO, AEO is the next thing you need to understand, and if you run an agency, it's a service you can sell.
This is the explainer: what AEO actually is, how it relates to SEO and to GEO, the work it involves, and how agencies should approach it. For the agency-service and measurement side, see AI visibility for agencies.
What's an "answer engine"?
An answer engine is anything that responds to a query with a synthesized answer rather than (or on top of) a ranked list of links:
- Google's AI Overviews, the AI-generated summary that increasingly sits above the blue links.
- Classic featured snippets, the boxed answer pulled from a page, which predate AI but follow the same logic.
- ChatGPT (with search), Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, and other AI assistants people now ask the questions they used to type into Google.
The common thread: the user gets an answer, the answer cites some sources, and being one of those sources is worth far more than being link number seven in a list almost nobody scrolls to. AEO is optimising for that.
AEO vs SEO
They overlap and they're not the same.
- SEO is about ranking in the list of results. The unit is a position. You win by being the most relevant, authoritative, well-structured page for a query.
- AEO is about being the answer, or a cited source in it. The unit is presence in the synthesized response. You win by being the most extractable authoritative source: the page an engine can lift a clean, correct answer from.
The signals overlap heavily. You generally still need to rank well to be pulled into an answer; authority, relevance, and good content matter for both. But AEO adds emphasis on things classic SEO didn't stress as much: a direct answer placed where an engine can grab it, content structured so it's easy to extract, schema that tells the engine what's what, and your brand being mentioned consistently across the sources these engines trust. AEO is SEO with the target moved from "rank in the list" to "be in the answer."
AEO vs GEO vs AI visibility
The space is full of acronyms, so here's how they line up:
- AEO (answer engine optimization) is the broad practice: optimising to be the answer any answer engine gives, which includes Google's snippets and AI Overviews as well as AI assistants.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) is the narrower practice focused specifically on generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) and being cited by them. In practice it's a subset of AEO with a sharper focus. (Agency angle: generative engine optimization guide.)
- AI visibility is the outcome those practices try to move: how present your brand is across AI answers, measured. It's the metric, not the technique.
For most client conversations, you don't need to relitigate the acronyms. "We're optimising your content to be the answer AI search gives, and measuring how visible your brand is in those answers" covers it.
The AEO playbook
The work, in roughly the order it matters:
1. Answer the question directly, near the top
An answer engine can only lift an answer if there's a clean one to lift. For every page targeting a question ("what is X," "how do I Y," "best Z for W"), put a direct, self-contained answer in the first paragraph or two: two to four sentences that actually answer it, before the context and the nuance. This is the single highest-leverage AEO move, and it's also just good writing.
2. Structure content for extraction
Make the page easy to parse. Headings phrased as the questions people ask. Lists for steps and options. Tables for comparisons. Definitions stated plainly. An FAQ block for the related questions. Clean schema (FAQPage, HowTo, Article) so the engine knows what each part is. Engines quote the parts that are quotable; give them quotable parts.
3. Build topical authority, not one page
Answer engines favour sources that demonstrably know the topic. Cover the cluster: the pillar question, the sub-questions, the adjacent questions, all interlinked. A site with one thin page on a topic loses to a site with a coherent set of pages on it, in classic search and in answers.
4. Earn mentions and citations across trusted sources
Being cited in an answer correlates with being mentioned across the sources the engine reads. Round-ups, comparison posts, "best X" lists, reputable directories, references in respected publications. Brand-mention density across trusted pages is one of the strongest signals for showing up in AI answers, which makes AEO partly a digital-PR job, not just an on-page one. (More on the LLM-specific side: LLM SEO.)
5. Keep classic SEO strong
You usually have to rank to be the answer. AI Overviews and snippets pull heavily from pages already ranking on page one; AI assistants with search lean on the same signals. AEO is not a replacement for technical health, internal linking, and authority. It's a layer on top of a site that's already working.
6. Measure presence in answers, not just rankings
Track whether you're actually showing up. Are you appearing in the AI Overview for your target queries? Are AI assistants naming you when asked about your category? Who's being cited instead? Classic rank tracking won't tell you this; you need an AI-visibility check. (What that involves: what is an AI-visibility audit.)
How agencies should approach AEO
For agencies, AEO is the natural extension of content SEO, and it's packageable:
- Sell it as a service line. An AEO (or AI-visibility) audit, then content reformatting and mention-building, then ongoing measurement. It's a wedge most competitors don't offer yet. (Playbook: how to offer AI-visibility audits as an agency service; positioning: becoming an AI SEO agency.)
- Bake it into existing retainers. Most clients on an SEO retainer should already be getting AEO work; you just need to name it and report on it.
- Use it as a differentiator and a lead-gen wedge. An AI-visibility audit on your own site, or run on a prospect's domain, is one of the strongest openers there is, because it answers a question the prospect is curious about.
Where AEO is going
The direction is clear: more queries resolve in an answer, classic organic click-through keeps eroding, and the brands cited in the answer get the consideration the link below the fold used to. That doesn't mean SEO is over; it means "rank for the query" is no longer the whole job. "Be in the answer" is the part that's growing, and AEO is how you get there. Agencies that add it now are positioned for where search is heading; the ones that wait will be explaining to clients in 2027 why they didn't.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your content to be the answer an "answer engine" gives, or one of the sources it cites. Answer engines include Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Gemini, anything that responds with a synthesized answer rather than only a list of links. AEO involves placing a clean direct answer near the top of the page, structuring content for extraction, building topical authority, earning mentions across trusted sources, keeping classic SEO strong, and measuring whether you actually appear in answers.
- Is AEO the same as SEO?
No, but it's closely related. SEO is about ranking in the list of results; AEO is about being the answer, or a cited source in it. The signals overlap heavily (you usually need to rank to be the answer), but AEO adds emphasis on extractability: a direct answer the engine can lift, content structured for parsing, schema, and brand-mention density across the sources engines trust. Think of AEO as SEO with the target moved from "rank in the list" to "be in the answer."
- What's the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the broad practice covering any answer engine, including Google's snippets and AI Overviews as well as AI assistants. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the narrower practice focused specifically on generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity and being cited by them. GEO is essentially a focused subset of AEO. AI visibility, often mentioned alongside both, is the outcome they try to improve: how present your brand is across AI answers, measured.
- Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AEO sits on top of SEO. Answer engines pull heavily from pages already ranking well, so technical health, authority, and good content still matter, you just need the additional layer that makes your content the answer rather than only a result. The shift is that "rank for the query" is no longer the whole job; "be in the answer" is the growing part, and AEO is how you address it. Agencies should treat AEO as an extension of content SEO, not a separate discipline that displaces it.
